GUIDELINES FOR CHOOSING FURNITURE WOOD

Depending on whether the furniture will be used indoors or outdoors, there will be appropriate types of wood. In this article, we will talk about materials for indoor use.

What are the Different Types of Wood Furniture?

1.      Solid Wood for Furniture Making

Solid wood is lumber wood that has been cut directly from a tree.

Types of Solid Wood

- Hardwood: compare to softwood, it will be denser.  Lumber hardwood trees normally grow more slowly. High quality wooden furniture is often seen made in this type of wood.

- Softwood: is less dense than hardwood. This type of tree normally frow more quickly (coniferus or evergreen)

2.      Engineered & Manufactured Wood for Furniture Making

Engineered or manufactured woods contain various types of wood composited together. Even though they are not solid woods, furniture manufactures often use this type thanks to the availability, comparative price and convenience.

Types of Manufactured Wood

-Plywood: (can be known as original engineered wood) a type of strong thin wooden board consisting of two or more layers glude and pressed together with the direction of the grain alternating.

-Particleboard: (also known as chipboard or low-density fiberboard) manufactured from wood chips and a synthetic resin or other suitable binder, which is pressed and extruded.

-Medium-density fiberboard (MDF): made by breaking down hardwood or softwood residuals into wood fires, often in a defibrator, combining it with wax and a resin binder, and forming it into panels by applying high temperature and pressure. It is generally denser than plywood. It is made up of separated fibers but can be used as a building material similar in application to plywood. It is stronger and denser than particle board.

Most Popular Types of Wood for Furniture

-Pine Wood:

Pine wood is softwood. It is widely used and known to make wooden furniture. It is due to several factors including its abundance, ease of work, and versatility and its cost. Pine wood has a straight grain, medium texture, ensuring stability when used as furniture. However, some types will have uneven texture and appear knots. There are sapwood and core that are not clearly distinguished, the heartwood is light brown and the sapwood is lighter yellowish white. However, the wood has good strength, durability and elasticity.

-Oak Wood:

Oak species are strong, hard, heavy and dense with very close grain and due to their high tannin content, they are very resistant to insect and fungal infestations. Oak is commonly used for furniture, joinery, flooring, panelling, decking and veneers.

-Ash:

Ash wood is strong, durable and generally light in colour. It is coarse but the grain is fairly straight. Ash is considered harder than Oak. But they are less resistant to moisture.

-Beech:

Beechwood is a popular component of more elaborate furniture and holds up well over time due to its density. The wood is often seen in chairs and seating (as well as flooring) and is known for its shock absorption properties.

-Mahogany Wood:

Mahogany is a beautiful wood and know as one of traditional wood in furniture making. mahogany is a lightweight yet strong as oak wood.

-Mango wood:

Mango wood is a durable hardwood due to its dense grain, it has a strength comparable to Ash and Oak. Mango wood has a uniquely fine grain, which creates beautiful textures and patterns. Aesthetically beautiful: Due to the distinctive texture and patterns, as well as beautiful wood grain, Mango wood is a great option for those looking for something truly unique. Due to the variation in the wood colour, you are guaranteed a piece of furniture that can’t be replicated.

-Mindy wood:

Mindi has a density similar to Red Oak. Naturally resistant to decay and fungi, Mindi wood is an extremely workable wood. The wood dries easily and with less shrinking and warping than comparable materials. Fresh-cut or mindi sap wood appears close to poplar, as it's yellowish with brown streaks. With exposure to light and closer to the heart wood, mindi grows darker in as in the colors found in teak or cherry. Its texture is coarse like oak, but it has tighter grain patterns than oak does.

-Walnut:

A durable hardwood. Grain is usually straight, but can be irregular. Has a medium texture and moderate natural luster. Carved walnut furniture can maintain its shape for years, making it a top option for decorative furnishing.
